Information and Updates on SDUSD and California Vaccine Mandate

On Sept. 28th the SDUSD Board voted on a vaccine mandate for staff and students which was followed two days later by a Statewide mandate for all California schools (public, private, and charter).

On Wednesday I sent an email to all members asking for your thoughts on the SDUSD vaccine mandate. Members were asked to tell SDEA leadership whether they supported or opposed the plan and to share any concerns or questions they had. Thank you to every member that responded to the survey. It is extremely important that we hear from all members in regards to this important topic.

The results of the survey are that 78% of the SDEA members who took the survey support SDUSD’s vaccine mandate.

In response to the legal and contractual questions raised in the survey, we’ve developed this SDEA VACCINE MANDATE FAQ. The FAQ will be updated regularly as we receive additional information

Throughout the pandemic, SDEA members have sent a clear message to the District and our school communities that we must follow the science and implement COVID mitigation measures that effectively keep staff, students, and our communities safe and which allow our students to continue learning.

While there is diversity of opinion among educators on the question of vaccines and mandates it’s important for all of us to remember that our union solidarity is our greatest strength. We must continue to support each other and our students during these challenging times because together we are stronger.

In Solidarity,

Kisha Borden
SDEA President
