How SDEA Health Benefits stack up
SDEA and tiny Julian Elementary are the only unions in San Diego County that have negotiated fully paid health benefit premiums for the plans offered. For example, Sweetwater ($14k), Chula Vista ($9K), Vista ($10.8k) and San Marcos ($13k) all have a maximum amount (in the parenthesis) that the District contributes towards benefit coverage. This is called a “hard cap”. For example, if a family benefit plan costs $16,000 per member, but the bargained ‘hard cap” is $10,000, members would have a $6,000 deduction in their paychecks over a year’s pay period.
Some unions such as Grossmont and Oceanside have employee-only coverage, and the members must pay the full, or partial, premium cost to enroll a spouse, and/or family members.
Our union’s contract language requires the District to pay full costs of the benefit plans during the term of the agreement which expires on June 30, 2017. Once again, SDEA members should be proud to see that our efforts during the Fight for Five! protected health benefits for themselves and their families.
